WE HYPE: CHILDISH GAMBINO aka Donald Glover

You can’t talk about Donald Glover these days without bringing up his musical venture as Childish Gambino. With a name derived from a Wu-Tang Clan name generator (a joke name that stuck), more and more people are recognizing Donald’s nack for creating catchy rap songs that incorporate tons of pop culture references.

As proven through”Freaks and Geeks,” it’s hard to catch all the references in one shot. Citing the poet E. E. Cummings, Eggo waffles, Gavin Rossdale (from the band Bush), and Black Swan (just to name a few) he successfully manages to intertwine all of these seemingly unrelated people and things effortlessly. The lyrics below have already been mentioned in a past Music Monday post but they are just too good to not repost.

Does anyone else remember the petition to get Donald an audition for the new Spider Man movie? Well if not, in “Not Going Back” he throws in a line about it and his refusal to go back to the life he had be for. Pretty deep considering he also talks mentions a terrible rap song he wrote for Rashida Jones, and Michel Scott.

Childish Gambino certainly doesn’t hold back, even mentioning race, religion, sex, and obviously, the ladies. He’s certainly right when he calls himself a, “renaissance man with a hollywood buzz.” In a short time, he’s catapulted himself into the limelight and with the recent start of his US tour, appropriately entitled the I Am Donald tour in which Donald Glover opens for Childish Gambino (clever right?), he’ll be sure to get plenty more buzz.
