WE HYPE: NBC’s COMMUNITY aka Donald Glover’s Bread and Butter
Community airs on NBC 8/7c on Thursdays - or you can watch from Hulu like the rest of us
When Community first aired, the cast seemed a random hodgepodge of actors I would never expect to be on broadcast television: Joel McHale from E!’s The Soup, Ken Joeng from The Hangover, Chevy Chase, and Pete’s wife from AMC’s Mad Men. There was also some Indian guy I recognized from an episode of ABC Family’s Greek and some writer dude from 30 Rock.
Two season’s later, the dynamic duo Troy and Abed (played by Danny Pudi and our HYPE OF THE WEEK Donald Glover) is one of my favorites on television and not only does every episode of Community make me laugh, they have become heartwarming. As redundant as it sounds, Community is truly about the idea of “community” - along with viewers’ experience watching it. At first, everyone was awkward and we knew very little about the characters. However, as they shared experiences and learned more about one another, they grew into a tight-knit community, a family. Aw.
By far one of my favorite episodes this season is “Critical Film Studies”, with an homage to Pulp Fiction and existential crises from both Abed and Jeff.
My favorite moment of the show is when the credits roll and Glover and Pudi shine. It’s Community’s version of Monty Python’s “and now for something completely different.” The video of the “Anthropology Rap” with Betty White is no exception.
Here are some of their best quotes (thank you SmallScreenScoop)
Troy [to Abed, who is dressed as Batman]: Can I ask you something I always wanted to ask the real Batman?
Abed [in Batman’s voice]: Yeah!
Troy: Am I good looking?
Abed: You’re a very attractive young man.
Troy: I knew it!
Abed: I hate when they finish each other’s…
Troy: … pies.
Troy: I’m a Dracula.
Abed: You mean a vampire?
Troy: I don’t need to know which Dracula I am to be a Dracula. Nerd.
Tonight’s episode “Paradigms of Human Memory” will have the cast go down memory lane when they find items Annie’s Boobs has stolen. How can you not watch?
